Freedom in the story of me

A Fresh LookA Fresh Look
62

Hey friends,

I always thought I had to choose between believing my story and rejecting it. Now I realize this story is a fantastic work of fiction. Let me explain.

From the highest perspective there is nothing but awareness, not separate from any experience. Any thought doesn’t mean much from this perspective, including a judgment on a personal story. There’s possibly not much more to say about the essence of non-duality, and hopefully I’ve properly introduced this for anyone unfamiliar with it.

If you have a painful personal story, and that’s your perspective, it is possible only staying with ‘this is a meaningless painful story, appearing in awareness’ isn’t going to bring forth a shift to a higher perspective. This can especially play if there is deep fear or rejection.

My inclination has been to reject my own story, and when I heard of non-duality I saw this as a confirmation of my beliefs. I saw only awareness as real, and any story as unimportant. Around the same time, I started to become more aware of the rejecting thoughts. For me, it was key in this process to get in touch with the body and with emotions. It was important to let these energies flow and bring some love and acceptance to them. Energetically, rejection reverses the natural flow of energy in the body so it doesn’t flow much anymore.

Girl Effect Dot Org

Richard J MillerRichard J Miller

Check this out, it's so brilliant and so simple. I think that it is more effective than just plain micro-lending. More effective than revolution, arming the rebels, probably costs one/thousandth of the war on terror, and might actually work.

Consciousness Online ~ Sharing Commonsense Co-Consciously

Sperry AndrewsSperry Andrews

This group consciousness practice shows you how to reliably focus the attention and intention of a group to experience the joy of feeling liberated and at peace with everyone and everything. A state referred to as Cosmic Consciousness is often achieved, an unmistakable sense of existing in a unity with all people and the whole of Nature. In a word : PARADISE.

There is Only One Thing to Do

Nick GancitanoNick Gancitano

Question: For more than 6 years now I have been 'doing' Self-inquiry to figure out: Who is the doer? When there is no I-thought, actions seem to happen on their own. No doer, like a sentence that has just been written down. Or as you state on your website, seeing/hearing/smelling is happening without an I doing it or thinking about the action. Only when there is a pre-thought such as 'I am now going to lift my right hand in the air', 'I' can see that that thought just happened out of nowhere. Not that the arm is moving or happening on its own accord. That is why the I is still in place, because it feels like I am the doer. So I am the doer and I am not the doer at the same time. This cannot be right and at the same time it feels like something is missing. Any suggestions to make the seeing clear? [Click 'Read More' for Nick's response]

All the Way Home Read from Paul Lowe's In Each Moment

Richard J MillerRichard J Miller

As I said below, I have enjoyed reading Paul Lowe, and I am thinking that for now he is not doing any filmed talks, so doubtful that I could get him on.  You can get emails from him on a wide variety of subjects through his web site, but nothing as direct as his books, this one "In Each Moment" from 12 years ago.

He suggested reading that earlier passage out loud, and I enjoyed what came of it, even though it was not that easy for me to read coherently, and my voice was even distorted.  But so what, it is just my disguise.  Now I tried again with an even longer passage, still not that easy for me to read, but I hope some of you will enjoy it.  I used a different image just to keep them separate. The video part is just a branding of Paul and probably not necessary to watch.  I really don't have the habit of presenting straight audios, so Youtube it is.  If I stumble too much you will have to find the book, which I recommend anyway.

In these two chapters he addresses directly the "true self".  In a way, the true self perks up its head and listens.  It is kind of a simple technique, but a miracle when that happens.

From Paul Lowe's book, In Each Moment

Richard J MillerRichard J Miller

A chapter called "When the Spirit Takes Over".  I crossed paths with Paul Lowe more than 25 years ago, but never really got close to what he was doing.  Lately I have been reading his books from the 90's, and I find them quite helpful and clear.  This reading he suggests listening to with closed eyes (or eyes at "half mast"), so I will read it for you.  www.PaulLowe.org

Here is some Paul Lowe from the same book that sets it very simply.

"There is a state of being that has been described as "the peace that passeth all understanding," the Tao, or the Hidden Harmony. Closer to our own experience we tend to describe it as happiness, spirit, freedom, source, or inner peace.  Yet no word or phrase can really express the nature of that state.

This indescribable state exists equally in everyone.  It has been covered up by what we have been told, what is, and is not possible. From this conditioning, we have created patterns of behavior that have literally buried our essence, our joy and our spirit.

We have assumed that there is something wrong with us and we have spent our lives attempting to put it right.  In fact, there is nothing wrong; all we need do is become aware, in each moment, of the behavioral patterns with which we have covered our essential self.  When we are present to each moment we are on the path to "the indescribable," to freedom.

Much of the time we feel uncomfortable and we try to escape from this experience.  We escape into our addictions, into alcohol, smoking, eating, anger, relationship conflicts, or complaining.  Working on ourselves can also be like a drug; it is what we do instead of being exactly who we are, feeling exactly what we feel.  We can encourage ourselves to be who we truly are, to feel whatever we are feeling.  There is no need to understand, nor to work on ourselves.  All that is needed is simply to be ourselves.

When we do this, layers that cover what is essential in us then drop away on their own.  Our system is self-healing if we allow it to be.

We have forgotten, or lost touch with knowing, that we are spirit contained in a body, mind, and emotions - - and not a body that possibly contains the essence of pure spirit.  This is the realization that awaits us as we bring ourselves present to each moment. Everyone is looking for the way home.  It is closer than we ever imagined.

A life of freedom begins when we realize deep within ourselves that we are whole and complete just as we are. There is nothing to do, to find, to see, to understand, to work on.  There is no right way to be.

Most people live on a surface level.  When you live this way it is like being on top of a rough ocean, getting tossed and churned around with the waves of life.  Peace and fulfillment come from living in the depths of ourselves, sensitively, with awareness, in each moment."

Moving Forward from Zeitgeist

Richard J MillerRichard J Miller

Sperry Andrews introduced me to Zeitgeist almost 2 years ago.  I listened to the director Peter Joseph speak about many obvious and not so obvious defects in our society, which I had appreciated.  I left it because somehow the tone to me was too personalized, that there was a THEY out there, and they were doing it to us.  The approach seemed to be a conspiracy theory, or another "anxiety approach".

The movement has much momentum, and this is their movie released this year.   It really has some deep truths and presented in a level headed way.  Whether the ultimate solution is their Venus Project, I can't say, but why not wish them well?  This kind of living would have to get modeled in some place.  Let them do it.  Send them our encouragement.  (This movie is long, 161 minutes - Most of this film is very rational and well thought out.  It is impressive.  Youtube allows only 3 choices for a thumbnail.  This image is unfortunately not representative of what they are talking about and only a minor illustration.)

Dominique Mazeaud, care for water resources through beauty

Richard J MillerRichard J Miller
1

This ritual brought 60 local women together in celebration of water, our life giving source. The ritual also bore witness to the contamination of our water supplies* and ended with a healing prayer. Inspired by the tradition of women as water bearers, each woman carried her own pitcher in the ritual as a symbol of her personal commitment to guard and conserve this precious resource. The combined waters carried by these 60 women represent the collective impact of their individual commitment. Their prayers were sealed in a bottle and offered to the Pacific Ocean.

Course of Awakening Spring 2011

Loch KellyLoch Kelly

The Course of Awakening - Spring 2011 Semester

awakeningWith Loch Kelly

In this course, we will explore the direct experience of Awake Awareness, which is at the heart of the world’s mystical and non-dual teachings. Being Awake is our natural condition, not something that is created or earned. Most of us have not been aware of this overlooked dimension of consciousness because we have not known how to re-connect with it. We can rediscover the freedom that is already here as we learn how to look, where to look, what to look for and who is looking. Loch presents an easy to understand framework for the paradoxical journey of waking up from our mistaken identity, waking in to an embodied life and waking out to relationship and activity. Each class will include a talk, dialogue, meditation and inquiry aimed at helping us re-connect with Awake Awareness at any time. Each class builds upon the previous one, so that we can explore the process of awakening as it unfolds.
