In an Advaita Vedanta book which I recently read, Self as explained both up and down the ladder....! It may be all one Self in disguise.

1. SELF - Paramatman or Brahman the unmoved mover (Highest aspect of God - No maya - Pure Awareness) (aspect of God)

2. Self - Ishwara the God who creates the world and sustains it through maya (Descended aspect of God and creator of maya, laws of existence, Evolution and Karma) (aspect of God)

3. Self - witnessing self in us when self identifies with the source (Merging with Source and behaves egoless. Self becomes egoless in the individual. Mind and Intellect understand their limitations) (aspect of God)

4. Self - Witnessing Self identified with the Mind (like, 'witnessing self' aspect becomes powerless) (aspect of Jiva)

5. self - Mind superimposed on witness (like, mind dominates the witness and crushes the 'witnessing self' aspect, becomes Egoistic)(aspect of Jiva)

6. self - Materialistic mind identified with the worldly aspects (Generalistic/Ordinary Mind) (aspect of Jiva)

Adopted from the book (in my words with explanation): I, THE SUPREME TRUTH, ABSOLUTE AND ULTIMATE by Sridhara Bhat. Please read the original book for original explanation.

Do I have to have a ladder?

Boy, that seems like a life time of work, (Perhaps it's the origin of the many lifetimes concept, since measured progress is nil, on such a long ladder.)

A long ladder wouldn't make people happy, if they thought that they were on the first rung.  Therefore can we assume that ladders were invented by thouse who thought they were on the top rung? Can I choose not to believe in their heirarchy, and visualize all of their levels appearing at once? Well, I do choose that, whether it is allowed or not.

The passage just seems to mean that not everyone is in the same level of evolution. It is merely indicative. The passage may mean that there is only one 'Self' in operation through out in disguised forms. Just as there are variety of animals like cats and dogs out there, in humans also there are also variety of beings similar to cats and dogs. In my opinion, this very moment, it is very much possible to achieve the state of truth realization (shedding the ego, merging with the source and becoming witness). It is certainly possible.

Response: It may or may not happen and it depends on evolution and not on man,

because man neither controls evolution nor the moment or choice.
