Why does Mind live only in the Past or Future, not the Present?

In my opinion, mind is nothing but collection of thoughts. The power to think, perceive, guess, imagine, intend, desire etc is collectively known as Mind. These are outsourced only from memory, the store house. When the mind dwells in the present it dies. Now, abandon all your thoughts and focus on the present. There is only an eternal, immaculate self or being. I mean, Self as one without any identification. This 'Self' is not a thought or Mind. It is the witness to all that happens.

The mind by its very nature loves to dwell only in the external world of phenomena, shuttling between past and future, ignoring the present. Reality or Awareness constantly flows in the present. We can't ever say what present is. Present is in a constant flux. Within the Planck time, which is the smallest possible moment (1.2 × 10−17 seconds), the present time turns into past. But at the same time, we experience the present moment always, just like a river continuously flows uninterruptedly. This means there is only 'Present Time' all the time. There is no Past or Future, except as an imagination by Mind. We are always in the present moment, whereas our mind is always in the Past or Future. The present provides experiences, which goes in to the repository as memory.

Awareness always exist in the present and mind always exist in the past or future. In truth there is only Present all the Time, wherein one can sense the eternal awareness beyond time. But at the same time, we can slide into the mind to cognize the activities that occurs inside the ever present awareness for experiencing the world. The mind is a wonderful tool, which would help the present, with the experiences of Past and anticipation of Future. But, unfortunately we always miss the present by getting permanently locked up in the past or future.

Am I the Body or Mind or the Awareness? Reality and Awareness of existence constantly flows in the present. Merging with this Awareness of existence is Bliss and is called as Sat (Existence), Chit (Awareness), Ananad (Bliss). For this state, We have to transcend the Mind and stay put in Deep Meditation or Samadhi or Deep Sleep (Ignorant state) to realize this state of Bliss.

short answer

Why does Mind live only in the Past or Future, not the Present?

Answer: because no one resides in the presence of this unmoving eternal now - only in the memory of the past or the projection of the future does the mind a thought movement within the non-mover reside.

From belief to clarity.

why?

The mind doesn't actually live. Life does not know it is alive, only the knowledge imposed upon that life knows it is alive. That knowledge is born of perception. All Perception is dead knowledge....quite a dilemma huh?

This is hard for the mind to grasp, and just as well since we'd all go mad in trying to grasp it fully. Except those who know they have never existed or been alive in the first place.

The arrow can point in every direction - so we can use the arrow as an analogy for perception. Perception can point in any direction, in this case there is only the past or the future. The perception of past or future is the referent zero point of any observation and is why the now or central point cannot be pointed to because all pointing refers to something else in relation... ie: north, south, east or west, or past and future. Perception can never point to itself...and that's why mind lives anywhere it can get it's pointers on because that's the only place it can exist.

From belief to clarity.

We know that we live in a false world

That's because human perception is limited to a small window of frequency and temperature ranges.  Now we have instruments that give us a greater perspective of the world.  But still the bulk of human relations occur within our limited range.  We don’t need a bionic eye as of yet.

1. A fascinating discussion is the nature of time as experienced from that limited range.  Time is not just the ticking of a clock or the ageing of a planet. The way we talk about it, it is also the almost imperceptible shift of attention from the witnessing of what’s here to the considering of our thoughts about what’s here.  Observation and interpretation are so intermixed that some people see no difference in them.  Here we are told that this shift of focus transports us out of the present and into the past or the future.

2. Another representation of time has more to do with a branch of mathematics called differential calculus.  Calculus proposes that any behaviour can be modelled by mathematically manipulating equations made up of an infinite number of zero length elements.  (Key word here, modelled, and not a statement about reality.)  We are using two non-existent concepts, infinity and zero-length to come to some useful tool.

So above it is said (not to raise eyebrows claiming zero time length), that Planck’s time is how long the present lasts, and then it is the past.  Now we are not stating whether we are still observing, or have shifted into interpreting.

3. Experientially we all know and believe that the present is the longest lasting element of time.  It never never ends. (Or should I say that the present is Planck’s number 1.2 x 1017 long, in seconds, years or light-years.)

Life is always in motion.  Motion equals time.  Therefore life equals time.  This is the most obvious of the obvious.  But yet in order to substantiate somebody’s theory, we can’t go with the obvious.  Therefore we have to say life is an illusion.  (Sounds complicated.) Yet the observer of that illusion is also willing to live in the illusion, and hang around long enough to observe the conclusion of our dance.

It is a good thing that our imagination is not made of rubber bands, because stretching it that far, it would surely break.

Good !!!

Well said. I fully appreciate your views. That's the reason, I don't give credit to few people consistently writing as, "Man is not the doer. Man is not in control of anything!"

I am also of the opinion that we are willingly participating in this grand illusion.
